Proclamation by St Augustine frees slaves and servants

A letter from Charles Town SC reports a St Augustin proclamation offering freedom to white servants and enslaved people from Carolina Purisburg or Georgia who join them. They are promised land near St Augustine and over 700 have been received, alarming Georgia planters who fear ruin. The author warns this signals an intended attack on Georgia with freed people as pilots and enemies.

City of London Common Council Ab solves Sheriff Eligibility

In the City of London chamber on May 28 1739 the common council orders that any person nominated to be Sheriff of Middlesex who pays four hundred pounds and twenty marks plus usual fees by May 23 six o clock will be exempt from Sheriff eligibility for life unless they later become an Alderman, in which case they may be liable to election.
