Exempts and Police Power in Paris Under Scrutiny

A Parisian letter surveys abuses by the Lieutenant of Police and his Exempts, detailing extortion, confiscations, and coercion against widows and common folk. It cites specific cases of false certificates, arrestees sent to hospital, and a beheaded Exempt, arguing these “Blessings of arbitrary Power” must be faced by Britons as they compare governance.

Bristol Key dispute ends with judge's verdict on levied privilege

In Bristol a special jury at the King's Bench Bar in Guildhall heard the mayor claim the right to tolls and maintenance funds for the city key, supporting a long standing by law. After hours of Parliamentic clause reading, the jury awarded damages of 40 shillings to the plaintiff and upheld the city’s privilege to collect the toll, yielding over 600 pounds annually in revenue. In a separate case, a gentleman faced damages for criminal conduct with a Jew's wife, where a jury awarded 1000 pounds plus costs after revelations of alledgedly improper conduct and a staged cover story. Additional local business included elections at Christ Hospital and officer appointments at Bridewell and Bethlem Hospital along with a proposal to replace some governors. Public notices announced prisoner and criminal work programs.
