Account of the Insurrection of the Chineze at Batavia 1740
An eyewitness account describes a Chinese plot in Batavia led by 90 000 Chinese to massacre Europeans and seize the island. Dutch forces under Van Imhoff and Van Aarden countered with 800 troops, battles in the highlands, and a brutal city defense. The Chinese suburbs burned themselves in a last stand, thousands slain or captured, and a pardon offered to those who surrender by late November while leaders face harsher terms.

Edinburgh July 6. Archibald Douglas of Cavers Ely died Friday last at his seat Teviordale. A Gentleman of studied honour and integrity, he served Scotland’s true interest in several capacities with applause. He was Receiver-General and Post-Master for Scotland at one time.
