Downs winds and ships fail on Thames voyage

In Gravesend on July 9 a fleet including the Elizabeth Bede, Minny Eves, Mercury Glyde, and others set sail for Holland and Turkey but encountered strong winds and were forced to fail. The Margaret Myre Susannah aid Sarah Belfour and the Duke of Bologna, all from Hamburg, passed by.

Naval action and Gibraltar siege reports from Portsmouth

From Portsmouth we learn that on Tuesday afternoon the Victory and a large fleet including the Princess Caroline and several 80 gun ships joined in St Helen's Road with other ships and prepared to anchor with the wind southeast. Admirals Norris Balchen and Ogle are coordinating ships off Plymouth for further action. Letters claim the Spaniards began the siege of Gibraltar on June 17 with reinforcement of 10,000 men expected. the garrison is in good condition and the English fleet remains in the Mediterranean. The Drake Sloop is repaired and ready for immediate service, and ordnance transport to the West Indies is underway. Reports from Carolina confirm Spanish forces surrounding Fort St. Augustine and thwarting General Oglethorpe. The Pilgrim, a Spanish iron-laden ship seized off the Ixifa coast, reaches Hermitage for salvage. Tuesday also saw the wedding of Thomas Chadwick of Manchester to Miss Hill at the Angel and Crown Tavern.
