Earthquake devastates Algarve towns in 1723 Lisbon report
An extract from the Lisbon Gazette records a strong quake felt across the kingdom from Cape St. Vincent to Tavira. Buildings collapsed in Albufeira Faro Tavira and Loule with churches damaged and plaques cracked. In Faro Cathedral holy figures fled and locals sought confession amid ruin. Water levels shifted and a caravel ran aground as the tremor subsided.
