Empress of Russia Provides for Fire Victims and Fortifications
Four days before a Petersburgh fire the Empress of Russia ordered relief for ruined inhabitants. Timber and building materials were supplied at prime cost, with funds to residents and court members whose houses burned. Generals and officers received substantial grants while guards searched streets after arson threats. Reports also note trade talks with Madrid and fortification upgrades at Stettin and Potsdam.
