Paris Academy Prizes For Science And The Propagation Of Light

The will of late M Rouille de Meflay funds two annual prizes at the Royal Academy of Sciences Paris. One prize of 70,000 Livres for the general system of the world and physical astronomy, and a second prize of 2,000 Livres on Trade and Navigation, awarded every two years. For 1738 the subject is The Nature of Fire and its Propagation. Submissions must be to the Perpetual Secretary by Sept 1 1737, with rules on language, anonymity, and receipts. The Academy may translate works and will judge when Easter 1738 returns. Awards depend on securing a receipt. otherwise payment is withheld. The notice urges British entry and notes various maritime items and advertisements accompanying the royal announcement.

Lost silver watch offered for reward

A small silver watch with moulded pillars by Beauchamp and Finckly was found coming out of St James's House via the street. The finder should deliver it to Mr Henry Neves, watch-maker in the Strand, or to Mr Fielding at the Buffaloe Tavern in Bloomsbury Square. A reward of two guineas is offered with no questions asked.
