Leghorn Reports Losses of Algerine Squadron in Levant
From Leghorn on May 15 reports the loss of most of the Algerine squadron that carried troops and munitions to relief of the republic. A French captain at Smyrna counted four ships lost and noted the envoy to Constantinople to report the disaster. Rumors say Persians seized Babylon, causing unrest in Constantinople, while Ottoman ministers seek speedy peace.
