The Royal Commission of Labor proposes compulsory state insurance for workmen injuries, a Saturday half holiday for stores, fortnightly payday for mines, and tighter sub contracting rules on rail road work. It rejects a minimum wage, favors dominion wide eight hour day, and calls for municipal labor bureaus and wage fixing through collective bargaining.
The Volunteer Fire Brigade invites all to Cumberland Hall on March 17 for the Fifteenth Anniversary Firemen Masquerade Ball. Admission is one dollar for gentlemen and fifty cents for ladies with prizes totaling over one hundred dollars for best dressed lady and other categories. Previous prize winners and familiar names are restricted from competing.
William Cummings of Nanaimo was found guilty today of riot and unlawful assembly in Nanaimo on Tuesday August 12. He awaits sentence as Justice Morrison rejected defense counsel Isreal Rabinowitz’s bid to confine Crown evidence to indictment grounds. The Crown would not agree to the restriction.
In Ottawa M Verville introduced a Commons debate on Nanaimo labor unrest. Mr Shepherd of Nanaimo rebutted Oriental labor claims, noting prosecutions of miners and colonial certificates, and urged clemency for imprisoned rioters as the censure vote failed 87 to defeat.
Before Jas Abrams S.M. A. Marshall appeared charged with being drunk and disorderly at West Cumberland. Marshall was fined $5 plus costs or 30 days. Tony Chott faced a similar offence and was fined $10 plus costs or 30 days.
New Westminster March 5. Before Alf Wardill’s trial for riot charges, Judge Morrison scolded United Mine Workers District 28 leader Mr Foster for interfering in strike trials. The judge charged Foster with improper influence, noting he acted without proper authority and disrupted defense proceedings. Other notices include timber theft charges at Royston, a vagrancy fine in Courtenay, and Courtenay jewelry business sale.
Correspondent Thomas Pearse of Cumberland British Columbia expresses sincere gratitude to the Islander medical faculty for their skilled treatment and to hospital staff for kind attention. He also thanks friends who visited during his illness.
Policy notes that all text books in public schools are free. It also directs that employment on government or municipal work be limited to British subjects. Provincial regulations govern electrical construction and the appointment or recommendation of assistant inspectors.
