Dominion Day to See New Grand Stand Erected

The Dominion Day Sports Committee met in the council chambers with Mayor in the chair. Collections total nearly 800 dollars and may reach 1,000 by July first. The program covers five a side football baseball lacrosse and many children and ladies events. An extra grand stand will be built and grounds improved under James Smith. W L Coulson donated fifty dollars to the day’s funds.

Progress of Power Plant for Courtenay Area

Grant Smith & Co. reports delivery of 180 tons of steel pipe and 200000 feet of stave stock for a hydroelectric plant for Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd. Construction of 2.5 miles of wood stave pipe begins in early July from No. 7 to the power house three miles from Courtenay. The lake is shut off and an impounding dam is under way, with completion targeted by mid July.

Grand Jury Acquits Barnard Farmer in Mine Death Case

The Nanaimo Court of Assize discharged Barnard Farmer after a manslaughter indictment stemming from a No. 5 mine shot that killed a Chinese worker. Justice Murphy explained manslaughter criteria to the grand jury. no bill was returned. London honors list names Richard McBride and Redmond Roblin as Knights Commander of St Michael and St George.

Concert and Demonstration of First Aid at Cumberland Hall

An evening event next Monday at Cumberland Hall features a Concert and Demonstration of First Aid by Cumberland Centre of St John Ambulance. Participants include Misses Spruston Henderson Jaynes and Messrs J H McMillan T Lewis and Walter Williams. Admission is 50 cents with 300 tickets sold.

Musicale a Success at Cumberland Church Concert

A Monday evening program at the Pr. oyterian Church in Cumberland featured Miss Hagwart of Vancouver singing with encore, Miss Fatener from Sydney NS, local talent including Miss Henderson and Mr Tom Lewis, readings by Miss G Anley, violinist J H McMillan, pianist Chas Parnham, and a band quartet. Constable Stephenson later arrested five individuals in nearby districts for liquor violations.
