Local Cumberland athletes train for five mile and one mile races and a hundred yard dash. Rumors say nine Nanaimo stars may sweep prizes. A Dominion Day celebration committee meets Tuesday to firm plans and mobilize participants. A poster announces $1,000 in prizes for baseball football tug of war and foot races.
The Cumberland Hotel owner orders withdrawal of ads from the ISLANDER citing the paper’s ten o’clock bar closing stance. The dissension harms revenue from a one dollar monthly payment, while the paper upholds its convictions and condemns the hotel owner’s past associations. Nanaimo police appoint Neen as chief to fill the vacancy left by James Crossan’s resignation after thirty-two applications.
City Hall Electric Theatre resumes after repairs with a program featuring The Outbreak, II His Last Parade, The Peace Offering, or The Absconding of Bridget, and An American Count. The event marks the first opening since the recent fire and repairs were completed by carpenters.
In Cumberland County Court Judge Barker heard Dan Kilpatrick's $200 suit against Charles Cavaliero for the cost of a horse killed last November by a coal train at No 7. The case was non-suited. Kilpatrick must pay costs. P P Harrison for Kilpatrick and Darling, barrister of Nanaimo, for Cavaliero.
Three attempts by Aldermen Cessford Maxwell Beveridge to form a meeting failed. The surveyor Bertram presented a cement sidewalk profile but quorum issues halted progress. The post office sidewalk grade requires adjustments, and a new meeting is set for Monday to issue bids for sidewalk construction.
In the provincial police court Judge Abrams heard Hirano a Japanese charged by Constable Davidson with furious driving over the Courtenay bridge. He was found guilty and fined five dollars and costs. Constable Davidson also charged C Johnson with cruelty to animals and furious driving over Courtenay bridge. He was found guilty and fined ten dollars and costs.
Thomas Lewis begins a new residence on Allen Avenue while John R Gray nears completion on Fifth Street. The Chief of Police expects to move in within a week. A R Kierstead plans a two story shop and residence on the fronting lot. Frank Scavardo enlarges his premises at Dunsmuir and Second. Wagon loads of material signal a town wide building boom. James Abrams, city magistrate and coroner, prepares a palatial home on Fifth Street.

The Courtenay Lacrosse Club, with twenty players, trains hard as they aim to put Courtenay on the lacrosse map. The Conservative Association plans seeking Indian Department lease for agricultural fair grounds with a race track between Puntledge and Tsolum rivers. Hoard announces 100 road workers on the Trent River to No 1 High Shaft project with grading on BC N extension toward Campbell River. Carlton Bros. secure a ten mile stretch north from McBride Junction. tenders expected for 35 miles to complete the Courtenay road.
Coroner Abrams inspected the Union Bay wharf after a Chinaman committed suicide yesterday afternoon. The deceased, an elderly rock picker from No 4 Mine, grew despondent due to feebleness and chose to end his life.
City engineer Allan Waters of Nanaimo will resign at month end after council acceptance and is appointed district engineer for the Skeena district with headquarters at Prince Rupert.
London June 3 Lloyd George the chancellor of the exchequer linked Welsh nonconformist spiritual independence to land reform. He attacked Primrose League leaders for owning church wealth and urged scrutiny of trust properties, calling the issue a democratic fight and a test of trust and property conditions. The speech signals possible future legislation.
