The Rev. Prescott Jernegan organized a sea water gold extraction scheme in 1896 that swindled investors through a staged process with a diving accomplice and fake apparatus. Jernegan and partners profited briefly before the bubble burst, with prosecutions and later swindles in Europe and England. he vanished abroad, while diver Fisher died years later.
