Mines Branch Loses Leading Official
The death of George Wilkinson chief inspector of mines occurred Wednesday at Royal Jubilee Hospital Victoria. Born May 27 1876 in Greys Southend England he came to Vancouver Island at twenty and rose to mines manager for Western Fuel Company. He served as chief inspector from 1917 to 1920 and again after 1923. He pioneered rock dusting to prevent explosions and earned broad support from officials and operators. He leaves a widow two daughters Ruby Evelyn and three sons George John Edward and a large family greet by relatives including Rev Robert Wilkinson and Mrs George Stephens.

Fire Destroys Grantham Home in Courtenay
Courtenay August 10. Fire completely destroyed the home of Mr and Mrs H P Allberry of Grantham after Mrs Allberry lit an oil stove. The two story wooden house burned rapidly as neighbors helped save nearby poultry houses. The couple, settlers with the Dominion Soldier Settlement Board, lost contents and only kept the clothes they wore.
