Charge man with theft in murderOTTAWA, 111. (UPI) - Thecompanion of a man shot to death has been charged with misdemeanor theft for allegedly taking $30 from the dead man'sbillfold.Mervil Smith, 23, Streator, had been in a car for a number of hours with James Lurz, 35, Streator, before Lurz was shot death early Sunday 24 miles southeast of Streator, authorities said.Police later arrested Craig Reynolds, 26, also Streator. and Monday charged him with voluntary manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon. Reynolds, a former Los Angeles resident, was held in lieu of $200,000 bond.Authorities said the voluntary manslaughter charge was filed after it was claimed the shooting was provoked Lurz was shot a number of times with a 22 caliber weapon.Police later accused Smith of looting Lurz’ body. They said he allegedly removed several bills amounting to $30 from his wallet and then replaced it.
