Artesia teacher murderedBy LOIS PURVIS Record Regional EditorARTESIA — An Artesia man was charged with murder this morning following the gunshot death about 8 30 a.m. of a bilingual teacher, George Wiliam “Bill Gutierrez, in an elementary school here.Arraignment of I. 0. Sonny ’ Gonzales, 35, of 1306 Washington Ave . was expected later today.The shooting occurred in the nurse's office of Hermosa Elementary SchoolGutierrez, 36. was pronounced dead at the scene by medical examiner D.J. Downey of Roswell A 38-caliber pistol from which six cartridges had been fired was located at the scene At least four, possibly five, bullets entered the victim’s head and body, officers said Students were confined to classrooms following the incident until the body was removed about 10 30 a m The shooti ng occurred about 8:30 am, according to a school janitor, prior to scheduled start of classes Some witnesses said, following the shooting they thought the noise re-suited from “the air conditioning going haywire \ but a janitor identified the sounds as gunshots Authorities said Gonzales turned himself in to Charles Bruce, principal of the school immediately following the incident with request that police be notified The principal, hearing the shots, had walked into the hallway to in vestigate source of the sounds when the suspect reportedly came to him and said he was going to turn himself in to police Bruce proceeded to the nurse s quarters, where he found the body,then returned to his own office to notify authorities Officials said the incident apparently involved a domestic quarrelGutierrez served as director of the bilingual program for Artesia public schools prior to this year, when federal funding was withdrawn and the project abandoned He was employed this fall as teacher in the migrant student program He resided at ISM Briscoe Ave Gonzales is employed at the Navajo Refinery here.
