Stauffer and Son merchandise store in Walkersville some time during the night, secured around $105 in cash, but were foiled in an effort to break into a safe in which there was reported to be a considerable amount of money.Most of the loot came from another unlocked safe in which were receipts from the Railway Express Agency, operated at the establishment, and Southern Farms, a firm operated by members of the Stauffer family.Investigators reported about $104 in cash taken from this safe. The money was in two steel boxes, which were also carried away. Of the total sum, $54 was from the box in which receipts of the Railway Express Agency were placed and the remainder from the Southern Farms box. About $8 in checks was also taken. The loot included around $40 in change, it was said.From the store itself, the robbers removed approximately $1.26 in change from ?n unlocked cash register and took a revolver belonging to the store, which is operated by R. Ward Stauffer.The safe in the store bore evidence of attempts at entry. The dial was bent it was reported, but the robbers could not breakthrough the door and finally gave it up as 1 a bad job.It was believed that the burglars also entered the adjoining prop- ; erty, where hams arc sold and ; which is operated by John H. Stauffer, Jr., but nothing was reported ( missing. No merchandise was be- , lieved taken from the general store. ,The robbers, it was said, evident- ' ly entered the store through a side window', which had been left open for ventilation purposes. Time of the robbery could not be fixed. It must have been after 10 o'clock last night, it was said.State Troopers Lauren Ridge and Charles D. McLane began an investigation.
