THE HIGH POINT ENTERPRISETHURSDAY AFTBtNOON,Murder CoseBy DON FOLLMIREnterprise Staff WriterThe focal point of stories and rumors surrounding Monday’s fatal shooting of a 15-year-old high school student, David Walker, on the school campus is an essay—written by the accused killer.Rumors and distorted interpretations of the essay's contents have spread nationwide, although few are informed as to the exact contents.On the day of the murder, police secured a copy of an English assignment written by the defendant in the case, Gerald Locklear. Without revealing the contents of the essay, police noted that they were studying it in a search for a possibleCentral High School Principal Jerry Shaver took exception tothe fact that the essay detailed the murder as was first report-★★★ed on national radio programs.And todayT Jerry Wilson, an attorney representing Locklear, agreed with the principal and described the essay as fantasy.Wilson noted that we would like a trial in the courtroom and not in the press, but due to the widespread coverage of the case with particular emphasis on the essay, we would point out that the principal (Shaver) described it as fantasy. I think this description would not be inaccurate.Wilson would not reveal whether he had read the essay and said, You will have to ask the police about that.A police spokesman declinedall comment today.Wilson specifically took exception to a national radio and broadcast by Paul Harvey that termed the essay a blueprint for murder.”Principal Shaver said that he★★★e Of WorkHere««lt;was not aware of the essayuntil students questioned bypolice following the shooting mentioned it.Shaver said that he found the theme in a locker and noted that the subject of the theme was taken from an English textbook which asked students to write about a former friend that they now distrustTo my knowledge,” Shaver said, the tone of the theme was basically that he had been wronged by a friend and that he was bitter.Young Walker was gunned down at 12:30 p.m. near the school cafeteria, just after leaving a late morning class on Monday. He was shot four times with a .38 caliber pistol. Six shots were fired, two missed. Several eyewitnesses were present at the time.Locklear was taken into custody, about two blocks from the scene and charged with the murder the same day.He remained without bond in the city-county jail today.
