IIS1ITi ej-Blakely Farley Sued for Pine Cat onHtate Land.Yesterday’s St. Paul Globe contains the following:State Auditor Dunn will, within the next ten days, commence suit against a' dozen lumbering firms that have committed trespass upon state lands. Mr. Dunn yesterday authorized Attorney General Douglas to commence suit against Blakeley Farley, of Urainerd, for timber cut from state school lands two years ago. Suit will be instituted ., for damages in treble the value I of the pine. Mr. Dunn stated yes-t terday that he had given the Brain-1 j erd firm ample opportunity to come forward and settle for the timber cut in 1898, and that he had been able to get no satisfaction from them. Mr.111 Dunn complains severely of the small e I lumber companies, rather than the large corporations. Thero is, he says, but very little illegal cutting done by the big companies, and when they do cut over the line, either by accident or otherwise, they always promptly pay the state’s claim. It is the smaller concerns and the contractors of very little reponsibility that cause the most trouble. All the paiers in the Blakeley Farley matter were placed iu the hands of the attorney general yesterday and suit started for something in the neighborhood of $2,004). The pint* cut amounts to less than 200,000 feet, but the state auditor values it at fti per thousand, and will sue for double damages. The law relating to timber trespasses is very severe in its provisions, and for that reason most companies have been very willing to settle on a civil basis and thus obviate criminal prosecution. At the discretion of the court the stututc provides for both a fine and imprisonment. Several of the firms which Mr. Dunn will prosecute have been logging in the viciuity of liraincrd and have their headquarters at that .or place. A very close check has been j|j kept on timber operations a!! over the 'as j state. A dozen cruisers have been in the woods, representing the state, since lust November.
