SHOOTS HIS WIFE.i§1stc-n9ttdi-wstirithrisIsieisDteriemielieree-mntrstoOn Sunday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bals-i baugh, living three miles northwest of Mexico, Eventus Doud, a brother of Mrs. Balsbaugh, attempted to take the?* life of his young wife, Ruth Doud, twenty-two years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Doud live in Richland township but at the time of the tragedy were visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Balsbaugh. Sunday morning Mrs. Doud had occasion to go to the wood shed and as she stepped inside the door was struck in the back of the neck by the full charge from a single barreled shot gun, fired by her crazed husband from a distance of about ten feet where he had been in hiding a-waiting a chance to commit the deed. The charge tore a gaping hole through her neck coming out just below the left ear grazing the bone and barely missing the carotid artery and the jugular vein.Mr. Balsbaugh was not at home at the time of the shooting, having gone to Mexico to Sunday School. Mrs. Balsbaugh carried the unconscious woman into the house and telephoned her husband who summoned Dr. Rendle and they hurried to the Balsbaugh home. Dr. Rendle then called Dr. Wagner, of Peru, to assist him. Upon examination the doctors found the unfortunate lady was very seriously wounded and for a time was believed to be fatally injured. However they administered first aid and all day Sunday she rested comparatively easy. Sunday evening her condition become worse and Monday morning she was taken in an ambulance to the Miami County Hospital at Peru, where she could receive the best possible care and attention. Her condition remains very serious but unless complications set in it is thought she has chances of recovery. After committing the deed young Doud left the Balsbaugh home and proceeded to the Judy home south of the Balsbaugh residence where he informed Mr. Judy that he had shot his wife and asked to be taken to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bren-son Doud, of near Chili. Here he was later arrested by Sheriff Simons and taken to the Miami County jail in Peru where an insanity inquest was held Monday afternoon and Mr. Doud was pronounced of unsound mind. Arrangements are now being made to take him to an asylum for treatment.Mr. Doud fras been showing symptoms of insanity for some time and has taken treatment at a number of hospitals and sanitariums during the past few years. An operation underwent some time ago is supposed to have left a blood clot on his brain which is responsible for his condition.He.has been married for about four years and has one child. Mrs. Doud is a daughter of Excounty Commissioner, Charles Ward and wife.pnofeymhe;stitiyindrcanie\MLtuW*tl:teUatriblt;ismlimg-LwP'Vtid:irdtiAnwJVslt;11o4IItl0x:
