S. Attorney John F. X. McGohey in New York as “the most extensive, complete and vicious ring of marijuana distributors operating in the United States.”The marijuana, it was charged by the United States attorney, was grown on a farm near Chaffee by Robert Williams, 41, and his wife, Elda, 38, who were arrested there and sent to New York, where they are held in bail of $10,000 each. The four other .defendants are} residents of New York and Detroit.McGohey said they were charged with conspiracy and possession, sale and transportation of marijuana. The three indictments in the case followed a two-months investigation of the alleged ring's activities, which since 1939 involved the shipping of “tons of marijuana to principal American cities.”If convicted, the defendants would be . liable to a possible sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, fines of $12,000 and a penalty of $100 for each ounce of marijuana handled.rSOUTHEAST MISSOURIrf
