It was at first supposed thnt he hrid wnlknd out of his cell after picking the lock, but nn Investigation disclosed that, with the aid of a portion nr an Irou bedstead, he had picked the mortar from the brick wall facing Northwest Street, making a hole large enough to admit his body, and after reaching the ground, a distance of six feci, had sealed the fence six feet high, and was soon lost to sight. The warden, it is said. had been talking to the prisoner a few minutes before he was miaflcd from bln cell. Doe had carefully placed a blanket to hide Ihe aperture. on which he evidently had worked during the night. Sheriff ftrvoll said of all the prisoners In the jail Doe was the last one he would suspect of attempting to escape. He is filKjut 40 years old. over six feet high, and is very polite. It is believed Doe Is an assumed name. He is said to have eotne from Virginia. He left a satchel and cloihiug behind. Police Marshal Hamilton. of Baltimore, nod the pollrc of Washington.
