SANDY TELLS OF ALLEGED THEFToNo Robbery, Says Pugilist,and Has Case-ContinuedJohn H. (Sandy) Ferguson, the pugilist, was In court yesterday morning on thecharge of robbery, appearing in the first session, before Judge Ely. The alleged robbery occurred Wednesday nightat a North End hotel,, Mrs. Ella Venot •of Chelsea being the victim of the robbery.Ferguson, It Is alleged, knocked the woman down, punched her and then stole her pocketbook, an expensive one, which she had tied to her belt. No lawyers figured in the case yesterday morning.Judge Ely asked Ferguson if he wanted to ask the woman any questions,and he asked Mrs. Veno if she had not had a previous quarrel some time ago and had her pfteketbook torn frc m her belt. She said she had had no such trouble. Then Ferguson turned to the judge and said: *Your Honor, I was at that hotel last night and saw this woman. T went there to hire a room. My wife wasaway and^J went to the hotel to put up. This woman would have you think she didn't know me very well, but she does. I know the lady, and she knows me. I’ve known her many years and used to deliver ice at her house.Your Honor, there was no such rob-4iCONbery and assault as she tells about. She asked me for five cents to ride home, and I wouldn’t give it to her. She asked me to buy her beer, too, and because I wouldn’t the trouble she speaks of started. I have witnesses that I can bring here that will tell you she asked me for both money and beef.
