One! fUl'D—Officials denied today that they were hoodwinked by a young American one-time medical student w h o posed as an intern last October at the Sudhury (iencral Hospital.The Sudhury authorities were queried after it was disclosed in Toronto that Bill Kearby, 26. of Iowa City. Iowa, known in Sudbury as Ir Miles, was serving a jail sentence for car theft Sister Jane Francis, superior of Sudbury Hospital, told Uniti-d Press International the hospital exe.utive started wondering about Dr Miles one week after he had joined the staff because of his ohxious inefficiency.She said he had applied for a (let 6 and piesented of a medical decree diversity of Iowa plus three references (.otters were sent out to check his references, but one was returned undelivered anil the other two were not answeredDr. II K Pearsall. president of the Sudhury branch of the Ontario Medical Assn. said The first thing I want to do is to quash reports that Dr Miles was hired as a staff physician as reported m some of '.he Toronto newspapers. He was taken on as a junior intern, the lowest |Hssible form of medical life and on three months probation at that.•||e wasn't allowed to administer a bandaid without supervision, and reports that he perlormed operations are ridiculous. After the first week we suspected he had only a superficial knowhnlge of medicine. His duties consisted of observing doctors diagnose patients and he was sometimes asked for an opinion. This is where he tripped himself up. * Pearsall saidHis diagnosis meant nothing, and he couldn't answer direct questions—but accusing a man of being a fraud is a serious matter. Pearsall saidWe wrote to his college and they reported that Dr. Miles was an excellent student and would make a fine intern. said Dr. Pearsall This threw u« for a while, until we discovered that Kearby had taken the actual name of an Iowa University medical graduate.i At Iowa City. University of Iowa officials said a Donald K Miles, Central City, graduated from the medical college in 1957. Miles now is a lieutenant in the Navy and wa- last reported stationed aboard the US S Norton Sound at San Francisco Officials said they had no record to show that Kearby ever atended 1 h e university i(in the same day. Oct. 29, that Kearby was arrested and charged with the theft of a car he had rented one month earlier in Toronto, the hospital staff held a meeting to determine what to do about his inefficiency.Kearby is now serving a 60 day , sentence for car theft, false pre tenses and fraud, His wife and four children, who accompanied him to Sudbury, returned to Iowa.The College of Physicians ana Surgeons in Toronto said Thursday it would not take any action against Kearb as long as he is deported after finishing his sentence.Kearby studied medicine in Iowa for a few months, police said.
