W Va , Aug 27.—JoeTiehnell, a well-known character of thin city, armed to the teeth. 1m to- night wandering about in the wood** of Calhoun county, pursued by a posse of officer a and citizens. He has a worn that he will not be taken alive, and if the pursuing party should ever take him there would be a battle In which Tiehnell would not surrender till his 1 ust ball was tired. Tiehnell has beenfor some time thought to be proprietor of a speak-easy in Calhoun county. He was arrested this afternoon for selling without « license at Brooksvllle, Calhoun county. With him were arrested Jack Mills and Dr. I. E. White and his wife. *The entire party was taken before a justice of the peace at Brooksvllle for trial late this afternoon.While the trial was In progress Tich-nell asked permission to go to his store and shut it up, as there was no one in charge. The permission was granted, ftnd Tiehnell wervt to his tore, whereth * speak-easy was supposed to be run.At the store he armed himself with haf a dozen revolvers and plenty of ammunition. He came out with a revolver in each hand and several In his pockets. He walked boldly back to •the courtroom, where the trial was Inprogress, and announced that he* wastree and would remain so. The officers started after him hut he kept his two guns leveled on every one who started in pursuit.Backing cautiously across a smallfootbridge, with his rifles and revolvers pointed and ready for use, should tiny attempt he made to arrest him. he in ide his escape. At the farther side of the bridge he stopped, fired several times toward the Justice who had been trying him and escaped into the woods. Immediately a posse was organized to follow him. and, arming themselvesthey started in pursui*t.Tiehnell had. however, secured a good start of them, and will probably not he cornered to-night. It Is rumored here•tonight that he has started for Parkersburg. his o.d home, and will attempt to And safety here. It is said that he will enforce his demands at the point of the revolver, and will escape from the Calhoun county officers by intimi-dv.ing every one he sees into helpinghim.
