Theft of 42 Cases of ArmsLaid to Navy Officer at TrialLy thf Associated Presa.NEW YORK, Aug. 8.—A court-martial case involving charge* of theft of weapons on a grand scale has been announced by the Navy in an action brought against Lt. Comdr. Equen B. Meader, 30, of New York City.The court chamber of the New York Navy Yard was strewn with machine guns, automatic rifles and bayonets yesterday as the Navy conducted court-martial proceedings against Meader, who is charged with theft of Government property, violation of the customs statutes and bringing live ammunition into this country.The weapons on display were part of the contents of 42 wooden cases Meader is accused of shipping here from North Africa as personal belongings.Officials say the case is unique in that no one individual ever hasvolving 180 stolen weapons are lodged against Meader.The weapons include Army and Navy ammunition, captured enemy equipment and British and French ammunition, which the prosecution contends was stolen by Meader while he was stationed at Mers-El-Kebir, Algeria, as executive officer of the naval station there.Chief Petty Officer John E. York, an ordnance expert for the 3d Naval District, testified yetserday that the ammunition endangered lives and property when shipped to the: United States. Comdr. Albert David Kaplan, a destroyer officer, testified that he brought a box to this country for Meader after Meader told him it contained antique weapons.Meader. who served overseas 18 months, attended the Naval Academy at Annapolis and was graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University in 1935.
