Officer in shooting to return to dutyThe Frederick City Police officer who shot and killed a man last week will be back on duty today.Pvt Edward R. Kornacki Jr, a 13-year veteran, has undergone counseling as required by Frederick City Police policy after an officer is involved in a shooting, according to Maj. Richard J Ashton, Frederick City Police chief.Pvt Kornacki shot and killed Charles E. “Buddy” Heffner Jr., 45, of Frederick, early last Thursdayfollowing a confrontation after a traffic stop on North Bentz Street.Mr. Heffner, who was stopped by police for traffic violations, emerged from his 1923 Ford street rod carrying a handgun.He refused to surrender his .22-caliber gun as ordered by officers Pvt. Kornacki shot him twice in thechest when he turned and aimed the weapon.Chief Ashton said he is not sure whether Pvt. Kornacki will return toregular patrol duty today or take other duties.“He said he’s ready to come back to work,” Chief Ashton said. “It will be up to him when he goes back on the street. It's whenever he is ready.”Chief Ashton said Pvt. Kornacki could work in other capacitiesPvt. Kornacki spoke with a localminister about the shooting, which satisfies the counseling requirement, he said.
