Luoma was employed at the Belmont mine and is believed to have a brother, Charles Luoma. living in Salt Lake. The fact that the car was going from Meaderville at a high speed at the time of the fatalaccident was also considered by the ! sheriff as indicative that the un-! known driver had stolen the ma-I chine.| Chest Is Crushed.The aged unidentified man who , was struck by an automobile at the intersection of Porphyry and Montana streets at 10:15 o’clock is believed dying. Dr. Malloy, who attended him, said there was little hope of the man recovering as his chest is crushed on the left side and he is suffering from severe lacerations about the head and face.Edward McGurk. a youth who lives at the Apex hotel, driver of the car, and William McHugh, also of | the Apex, who was riding with McGurk. took the man to the hospital and summoned the police. When Officers Rodda and Morrison took Luoma to the hospital they drove back to the police station with McGurk and McHugh. McGurk is held on a charge of reckless driving.McGurk stated that the man started across the street and then stopped. He said the automobile was traveling at a rate not exceeding 18 miles an hour and he thought that the pedestrian intended to return to the curb. McGurk says he tried to pass the pedestrian and as he did so the man stepped in front of the car and was knocked down.Hospital authorities were unable last night to identify the injured man who is believed to be about 65 years old. He was dressed in tan trousers and a dark sweater. He is about five feet eight inches in height and weighs about 150 pounds. His hair is white. Search of his clothing revealed no way of immediately identifying him, as only a watch and a box of matches were found on his person.Shortly after McGurk took the old man to St. James’ hospital, policewere summoned by the call to the.scene of the Luoma accident. A dark blue sedan, believed to have been stolen from Meaderville, struck Luoma. who was crossing at the intersection of Covert and East Broadway. Two witnesses saw the accident. but were unable to get the1 numbers on the license plates.The machine was reported stolen at 11:15, while the accident occurred at 11 o’clock. As the car was traveling west on East Broadway at the time of the accident, police and sheriff’s deputies believe the ma- i chine reported stolen in Meaderville was the one that struck Luoma. Burns was thrown out of his auto after it side-swiped the street car. officers were told. He was picked up by Ted Foran. 1314 Main street.
