I couldn't run his life.”She said he had told her several months ago that he wanted to run a red light with his car, hoping officers would pull him over and a confrontation would follow.Family members said he was upset by a separation from his second wife.“He was going through a divorce,” said George Schroyer, his brother-in-law and the owner of Schroyer’s Recycling Center, Reich’s Ford Road, where Mr. Heffner had worked for the past 11 years. He ran the can department.Mr. Schroyer said marital difficulties didn’t seem to affect Mr. Heffner’s work, that he always showed up for his job. “He was real nice. Everybody liked him.”Mr. Heffner’s first wife. Sherry Fike, of West Fifth Street, said, “He was a man who wasn't going to back down” from a situation. It wasn’t her fault.”Mrs. Fike said Mr. Heffner was a “good worker” and had many friends. “He would give you the shirt off his back,” and in fact once did just that. “Someone said, 'I like that shirt’ and he took it off and gave it to him.”Mr. Heffner had a good sense of humor and appreciated jokes, said Mrs. Fike, adding that his “pride and joy” had been the street rod vehicle he was driving just before the shooting.“I remember when he first got it, he brought it around and gave everyone on the block a ride,” Mrs. Fike said.
