COLLISION AT OAKFIELD,Conductor Burns' Train Met With Two Accidents Last Week.Mtsstngtr Wilson Rtclor and Biggigamm G. J. Ltonhard Shikan up.One of the most serious head end collisions of the year occurred at Oakfield on the Northwestern line between Fond du Lac and Janesville last Saturday, a double-header passenger train in charge of Conductor Burns of this city striking another passenger which was taking water in the yards at Oakfield. Mr. Burns’ train No. 25. was northbound from Janesville to Marshfield and the other train was f'oing south. Oakfield is their usual meeting place and the southbound train should have been in the clear before the donblebeader arrived. No blame attaches to Conductor Burns or his crew as they had the right of way under their orders.Conductor Burns noticed as his train approached Oakfield that the southbound train was not in the clear as usual and pulled the cord throwing on the emergency brake, but not in time to Avoid the collision. The moving train was ditched, Mail Clerk Kingsley being very seriously bruised while City Treasurer G. J. Leonhard, baggageman, and Messenger Wilson Rector of this city received severe jolts. Mr. Leonhard had ft cut in his leg requiring several stitches and Mr. Rector was bruised and shaken. In some unaccountable manner a brass key in Mr. Rector’s pocket was bent double without indicting any bruise to correspond. Neither was laid up by his injuries.Fire started in the mail car after it was ditched and a small amount of' mail was destroyed before the local fire fighters conquered the flames. None of the passengers were injured.
