On Friday, the anniversary of his death, that oversight was corrected.Howard was killed on April 25,1925, when he was shot during an incident that was described Friday as a “meleein Monetta.”The former sheriff and three of his deputies went to the farm of Sam Low-man to execute a warrant to search forillegal liquor.While Howard was reading the warrant, a fight broke out that resulted inhis death.a great day to make a wrongright,” said Interim Sheriff Jody Rowland prior to unveiling a plaque honoring Howard’s ultimate sacrifice. The plaque will now hang in the lobby of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office along with those of four other officers.On hand for the ceremony were Howard’s daughter, Marian Bray, and grandson, Howard C. (Bud) McCoy.Bray was about 3 years old when her father was gunned down. She recalled Friday the stories that she grew up hearing. “I, of course, never knew him, but my mother told stories about him,Bray said.One of those stories centered around how Howard would pay the taxes of those he was ordered to evict so that they could keep their land.These kindnesses, and others, were recalled by about 30 members ofHoward’s family following the ceremo-See HOWARD, page 7A
