The Cranbrook Herald celebrates steady growth and rising prosperity in Cranbrook. New government building, school, churches, and housing projects accompany a growing population and payroll. Officials predict 3500 to 4500 residents within 12 to 18 months as land deeds and loans attract builders and railroad workers relocate with families.
The cellar is ready and work will begin on the house next week. Engineer Drummond reports his new home will be completed soon. Interior finishing on the Catholic church will soon be inaugurated. R B Beattie will fix up the building he moved to the south part of town for renting.
Mr Philips and a large staff harvest on both sides of the line. Arrivals at St Louis hotel include Flowers MacDonald Nelson Robinson Lamberton and Bricker. Three bears were sighted during prospecting. two shot, one spared. A post office opens October 1 in Crows Nest Trading store. Mail contract between Phillipps and Eiko awarded to J A Peacock. About thirty Stoney Indians visited town and returned via south trail. Mrs Gordon hosted visitors at government house with card parties and drives to falls and lakes. Misses Phillipps Dunlop Roo chased coyotes on horseback. Madeline Phillipps hurt but attended school. Local sport options abound within three miles. bicycle track west of townsite in good shape. Moyie Leader rumors of Fort Steele Mercantile branch. J C Drewry named justice of the peace for South East Kootenay. Odd Fellows discuss Moyte lodge. Cranbrook lodge to assist. M Innes arranging housing for new meat market on south Victoria street. Park Mitchell & Co awarded lumber contract for Fort Steele. John H Fink named resident attorney for Sullivan Group Mining. Fort Steele Bank remodel almost complete. fire brigade to receive more hose and equipment.
The lumber lies on the ground for the new school building while directors seek orders to enlarge the project. Government plans are deemed totally inadequate for current needs and the near future.
A major mining deal closed between Saucier of Rossland and Pay Roll owners creating Pay Roll Gold Mining & Milling Company Limited. The project promises high assays from $7 to thousands per ton, with five cent shares sold locally and in Europe. A wagon road will link the mine to the railway, with Cranbrook as head office and wage center.
Gilpin buys furniture in car load lots and supplies the trade, offering favorable prices and quality. A fresh car load is on the way, inviting readers to inspect the stock and make selections.
Work advances quickly on the new Methodist church with an incline floor feature noted as a major improvement over a level floor. Plans include other additions to comfort and convenience for attendees.
J. W. Crane long-time day operator at the station has been transferred to Fort Steele Junction where he will take over as station master. Travelers and locals are assured of his obliging and courteous service for all business at the Junction.
The report notes multiple residential projects in the Baker Hill area. The Presbyterian church is being painted while Engineer Gill’s cottage nears completion and Mr. Doris adds to his Baker Hill home. Jake Fink’s new house nears occupancy next week and A. Moffat finishes exterior work. 13 Orchard adds to his Baker Hill residence as G. H. Miner plans a new handsome home with excavation underway.
Additional locals, Mrs. J. G. Taylor and son arrived Sunday night from Minneapolis to join Taylor, one of the train dispatchers. Mrs. Alex Watson came down from the North Star mine last week to have a growling molar pulled. An afternoon was hosted by Mrs. C. M. Edwards last Wednesday for friends to meet her sister, Mrs. Winterbottom. Mr Sick of Fort Steele Brewing said the brewery is in better shape than ever and that district residents praise the product.
J B Saucier of Rossland tours Cranbrook and argues the district will become a leading mining hub in South East Kootenay with a smelting plant and new mines. He plans to form companies for Carrie Lee on Lake Creek and Pay Roll, predicts heavy winter mining employment, and cites prospects across the Kootenays. Copper Crown work resumes nearby with winter sinking and cross cutting planned to prove the ledge width.
W R Ross buys Fay Templeton property on North Star hill from William Thompson. Bond option for Estella group set with $10 000 face value due by October 1 and payable over three years. Mining operator Richard Irwin visits town with Vielen and Matheson for St Marge river ledge work. Feavell and Hoe report Windermere prospecting and capping like the Red Line and Silver Thread with 1509 feet surface follow.
A party of capitalists and business leaders visited the Chickamaw Stone mine and Fort Steele area last Sunday morning. Charles theis led the group with EJ Dyer Simon Rosenhaupt W J C Wakefield and Verey Goodenrath among the travelers. The delegation departed town Sunday afternoon, continuing toward Bull River.
Costigan spent several days hunting on Mogie Lake this week and told a boastful bear tale. He described nearly a hundred yards away from a Patas station his intrepid hunt and the return. Tommy Michaud, a French companion, could not hide a smile revealing the joke. Costigan says he will wait longer next time before sharing another bear tale.
Ottawa reports the Dominion government has issued an order in council allowing refined lead sent to the United States for processing to be returned to Canada free of duty. The concession benefits a Canadian industry and enhances trade access.
The local lodge of Odd Fellows will host a banquet tomorrow night at the Cranbrook hotel. Grand Master Welch of Victoria and Grand Chaplain Clements of Nelson visit to Cranbrook to meet Key City lodge members.
Railway traffic on the Crow Nest line is exceeding expectations with volume rivaling the main line of the Canadian Pacific west of Medicine Hat. If this trend continues, traffic should grow further when the Rootehays feeders are completed and in operation.
Despite no official rites from the C PR the Cranbrook crowd seeks attendance with reduced Nelson boat and rail rates. The exposition promises its best ever year in the north west with fruit stock agriculture and mines as leading attractions plus various amusements.
David Scott of the Winnipeg Tribune travels to Cranbrook as part of his annual vacation. He stays with Messrs. Mepys and Hughes and finds Cranbrook favorable, noting its advantageous location and a bright future ahead.
Gone East for the Winter Harry Parsons who has worked for Cranbrook Lumber for sixteen months departed last Saturday for Oak Lake Manitoba to be away through the season. Parsons made many friends in Cranbrook who will welcome his return.
Mrs. Samuel Brewer of Fairmont Springs near Windermere visited town Monday on her way home from Wisconsin where she had not been for sixteen years. She noted changes and was glad to return to her home in British Columbia.
