The club announces a large winter program starting Monday, with strict punctuality for many classes including bone and wrestling limited to twenty per class, new badminton, and varied exhibitions. A busy timetable lists swimming galas, boxing, gym exhibitions, stunt night, and weekly dances.
His Honor Judge Thompson held chambers at Bernie as the county court begins regular sessions after vacation. Cranbrook opens Sept 4 with two criminal trials eight naturalizations and five liquor appeals. Returned defendants from government liquor cases face six months but are on bail pending appeals. Fernle docket opens Sept 11 with seventeen naturalizations and five liquor appeals.
John F. Taylor sales manager of the B. B. Eddy Company with R. G. Pease of Tees and Pongo Ltd visit Cranbrook, predicting improved finances and a prosperous fall for Cranbrook merchants and the Dominion. Taylor notes strong Eastern Canada demand and plans to ship large daily quantities of matches. a Nelson visitor mentions a new daughter.
Richard Ross a 17 year old from Kenab sustained his right arm torn off at the Waldo planer mill. Nurse Mrs Pope provided first aid at Waldo. He was rushed to Cranbrook where Dr Keen amputated the arm below the shoulder. Hospital reports say he is progressing well after heavy blood loss.
John D. McLeod died Monday at St Eugene hospital in his 68th year after a period of ill health. A longtime Cranbrook resident with his daughter Miss M McLeod he was known for horse dealing farming and mining interests in Kaslo. The funeral was held Wednesday at the Rutledge home with Rev B W MacKay officiating and many friends paying respects.
The Cranbrook Musical Society met at the YMCA to review the year and elect officers. Treasurer A Aggworth reported about 2800 dollars received and disbursed with a 1280 balance. dues set at five dollars except for the band. Plans include Mendelssohn Psalm 42, Messiah, Gilbert and Sullivan, and a membership drive.
The chief forester of British Columbia, PF Caverhill, Ottawa, says campers and travelers started 24.2 percent of fires in a season, with unknown causes likely adding to the total, suggesting about a quarter of fires arise from careless campers.
D M Proudfoot, Grand Master for British Columbia in the 1 C C F, spent the week in the Kootenays visiting district lodges. An official visit to Key City Lodge was planned for Thursday followed by a social function in his honor.
The St Eugene Hospital held graduation exercises in G W V A Hall with four nurses in the class. Miss Harriet Kennedy, Miss Thyra Carlson, Miss Margaret Gibson Hurry, and Miss Jean Black Patterson were awarded diplomas and medals. Address by G A Spreull, speeches by Rev Murphy and Rev Bisette, and Mayor W Cameron. Novak's Orchestra performed, followed by a dance.
A. L. Hay leads a local team from St. y's Prairie Marysville and accompanying riders to New Westminster for the junior stock judging contest. Also noted are community plans for a covered rink and curling club as well as church services and local travel.
The provincial public works department plans a major project to connect the Coast and interior highway systems, starting from Hope. Engineers will choose the route through the Hope Mountains, with a decision to be presented to the Legislature for funding. The report followed a tour to inspect the Quesnel Fort George linkage, noting only 10 to 15 miles remain to complete that section.
Friday September 7 a $2500 giveaway at the Star Theatre plus big picture specials. The Star shows Three Wise Fools Flaming Hour with Frank Maye Friday to Sunday. Mammoth Carnival at New Park Grounds September 10 11 12. Leopardess with Alice Brady at the Star September 12 18. Kimberley Mammoth Carnival September 14 16. Maroul Lloyd Safety Lust at the Star September 14 16.
Invermere report on the 13th district fair joined with the fourth annual stock show. Attendance and entries rose sharply, with strong marks for live stock and ladies' work. Winners included Mary K. Palmer for the bronze medal in the Better Baby Contest and multiple cups for cattle and dairy prizes. The fair highlighted Made in Valada promotion and community improvements on the grounds.
Mr. W. W. Kilby and Mrs. Kilby arrived in the city from a coast trip by motor and settled in a new home. They found city life not as easy to slip into as expected, and Mrs. Kilby will be at home on and after Thursday September 13 at Cranbrook Street residence.
