A mining camp surge follows new discoveries by Rilera and Monroe and the Kootenay and Perry Creek Mining Co. survey of a townsite and millsite. Prospectors flood Perry Creek with outfits heading in, hoping to strike rich and fuel a new gold boom near Cranbrook.
Engineer D B N Wilkie of the British American Corporation opened the Hoskina group in Cranbrook after purchasing several mines. Foreman A T Pollett failed to secure a required permit, leaving six claims unrepresented and subject to relocation. The loss shortens the group including the Gold Bug, hailed as the group’s best, now held by Mike Corrigan.
From St Marys, Fred Hazen arrived with copper specimens and says the government is starting a wagon road project five miles above Marysville to reach the lake. He notes promising copper showings on nearby claims and mentions a foot-thick galena find at Perry Creek divide. Toronto capitalists Blackstock and Gooderham were in town.
The Gooderham Blackstock syndicate owners of the War Eagle Center Star and 60 percent of St Eugene report strong returns from Kootenays investments after inspecting properties. A $50 drilling contest prize and two dozen Calgaray beer bottles accompany a mineral exhibit at Cranbrook Fall Fair September 24-25, with ore samples welcome via McVittie Hutchison.
John A. Turner gold commissioner issues autograph letter to mine managers. He says the minister of mines will ask the next legislature to propose a bill establishing a uniform code of signals for all provincial mines. Turner includes a Montana code for discussion with managers.
Phoenix has been incorporated. Lord Minto and party will visit Ross land this week. For the fiscal year ending June 30 Phoenix paid in to the government £15,000. Government public works spending in Phoenix is expected to total nearly $8,000 this fall. Twenty carloads of concentrates from the St Eugene mine passed through Nelson for Chile. An attempt was made to burn the Crown Point hotel in Trail. The Trail copper furnace has restarted after coke shortage. Greenwood property owners sue the townsite corporation over street grade changes. The New Westminster lacrosse team is back east and dominating Canadian clubs.
Gordon Ross began work on the new hospital building yesterday afternoon and, within an hour, fell from the roof a distance of 25 feet. He fractured an ankle ruptured arteries and suffered a severe head bruise.
Mr Turner invites mine managers to forward suggestions to the minister of mines. The eloquent code is well received in use. A man was badly shaken up and cared for by Dr Beattie until Dr King arrived from St Eugene. He was taken to Mission Hospital where amputation was feared.
Clarence Clover disposed of interests on Palmer mountain at a satisfactory figure while Long Oliver holds a Perry Creek claim near the coming gold camp East Kootenay. J H Conklin, a Spokane and Coeur d Alene mining man, is active around Tracy Creek and in town this week. Paul Hanley, ore hauling on the Sullivan contract, buys five more heavy teams, Frank Villeneuve shifts from Cranbrook to Lardean City and Perry Creek property, and G Tedlock reports the Sullivan compressor running well with Vin Tedlock declaring the Sullivan a cracker jack.
The Australian Comedy Company from Australia will perform Sapho tomorrow night here. The Nelson Tribune and Miner reports the group is far superior to any prior company at this venue. crowds filled Nelson and Rossland. They travel next to Calgary and Winnipeg. Tickets are at Beattie’s drug store. early purchase advised.
Gone to See the Elephant Erie Small departs Saturday for Charlottetown to visit his boyhood days. He returns with his brother Will’s wife, who will rejoin her husband a returned Klondiker. A Mrs Small may later join the party as an additional member.
The Capital Lacrosse team of Ottawa fell 4 to 1 to New Westminster of British Columbia in a closely fought match. New Westminster scored early and added two more tallies before Ottawa answered once. time ended with the Westerners ahead 4 to 1.
Moyle argues local boards of trade lack interest across Nelson Cranbrook Fort Steele Moyie. He says important matters arise in towns that should be handled by business men and urges regular organization and active participation.

Two days of speed events unfold September 24 and 25 in Cranbrook featuring Eastern “Crackerjacks” and major purses. Notable entrants include Tosti Loch Berg Brown Richmond Cherry Ripe Chick McGregor Hard Case and Lee Metford with a full two day program of trot pace dash hurdle and handicap races across multiple divisions and ages.
The Cranbrook Machinists Union held its first annual ball last Monday with excellent attendance. Notable guests included Mr. and Mrs. Nevins, Mr. and Mrs. T. Rookes, and others among about 50 names listed. A planned cake walk by Pieper and Fred Smyth was cancelled due to Smyth illness. Peter Lund canceled his Highland Fling for other duties, and Uncle Jim’s sailor hornpipe was reported false.
Customs at Cranbrook collected for August 1900 imports valued at 8845.00 with duty of 1598.81. Inland revenue receipts for the same month totaled 1155.94.
