The Consolidated Go paid out 117000 to Trail employers in February and the payroll reached about 1200 men.

Lent midweek reading at Christ Church Parish Hall

Nearly 60 attendees heard Matterlinck's Mary Magdalene with Rev W H Bridge abridging the drama to show Mary’s transformation through meeting with Jesus. Cranbrook Orchestra and soloists received strong applause for four items and vocal pieces. Next Wednesday will feature Hamlet with music. these evenings are praised as educative and commendable.

Overseas Club Social and Empire Day Children Event

The Overseas Club held its monthly social and whist drive at Maple Hall last Tuesday with many members present. It was decided to entertain city children on Empire Day May 26, 1916, with details left to the Executive Committee. Reverend W H Bridge spoke on club opportunities. the program included songs, a Highland Fling, a duet, and dance accompaniment. Whist drive winners were Mr and Mrs G P Tisdale. The next club dance is March 28 at Maple Hall with popular prices.

Private Glenday recalls the Langemarck battle near Ypres where shrapnel and gas left him with leg wounds. He crawled 150 yards to deliver a message then returned to a dressing station with another note. Enlisting in Windsor Ontario within thirty six hours of war declaration, he claims to be Canada’s first volunteer. He urges all able men to enlist and opposes neutrals and aliens holding jobs.

Gas casualty recounts world war trench ordeal

Mr Glenday describes being hit by gas, crawling to Major McKinnon and Col Hill with messages, treated by Dr Robertson, and evacuated from Poperinghe to Boulogne then Chatham. He spent 23 weeks in bed and was wounded in April after heavy fighting on Hill 60, near Langmarche, from late January.

Howard Drummond Wedding in Lent at Cranbrook

The wedding of Murray Leo Howard and Marguerite Agnes Drummond occurred Thursday morning in Cranbrook after a morning service at St. Hugene hospital. The ceremony was performed by Father McGuire with only immediate family present due to Lent. The groom’s enlistment prompted the exception to Catholic custom, and congratulations are extended to the couple.
