Most Heroic Act Honors English Machinist Broadbent
Yonkers July 21 a slender English machinist named Broadbent who arrived six months ago to work in a factory here has received a King's medal for the most heroic act of the year in the English maritime service. On the Fanter bound for the west coast of Jamaica the ship struck a reef near Cape Palmas Liberia and spilled jars of acid that released deadly gas in a lower hold. Six men including the captain and first mate died. Three seamen outside the hold fainted. Broadbent volunteered to descend with a rope to save the living and help rescue the crew.
