Fleetwood, a 35 year old single rancher, was killed when a bull he was watering suddenly charged, breaking ribs and a thigh. Dr. Green could not save him. the bull was killed. Funeral held at Cranbrook public cemetery. Crowds and city life in Cranbrook reflect on the tragedy and rebound of the town.
The Cub Reporter tours Sunday calls on friends of the family journal observing a fitter public health, notes a veteran soldier of France returned home but unseen by officials due to style and vanity. He urges restraint in social judgment and praises wartime sacrifice while stressing producers over dependents in a shifting postwar nation.
A letter from Santa Claus to The Fink Mercantile Co. Ltd. of Cranbrook, B C dated July 1 1918, confirms his planned December 18 visit to the store to deliver gifts for Cranbrook children despite wartime prices. He promises to inform the hour of arrival and ensures offerings for the good children.
John Bush was found dead on the floor of his rural shack three miles from town by Miss Lindquist on Monday morning. An inquest on Tuesday concluded he shot himself with a carbine on Sunday night, driven by despondency from illness. he possessed $1000 in the bank and $230 cash, to be sent to his mother in Norway.
Optimism surrounds Cranbrook as Kilby the picture framer buys the former Market building on Armstrong avenue to expand his operations next door to Patmore's. The District Farmers Institute meets this week with resolutions from East Kootenay institutes. Attending are Joseph Campbell and McMurdo for Columbia Valley, H. 8. Platt for Elk Prairie, G. H. Scott for Newgate, J. H. Hayes for Fort Steele, and A. B. Smith the local inst.
City accounts approved for payment totaling 2464.74 with items from Beattie-Murphy Co. Cranbrook Electric Light Cranbrook Sashy and Door Co. and others plus payrolls Fire Department City Engineer School Board and Provincial Government listed among totals.
A Monday meeting at the city hall outlined an August Chautauqua from the 16th to the 22nd with Harry White and Lamound present. Officers and committee chairs were elected including President Harry White and Treasurer B. E. Howard. The group urged broad support and season tickets. Last Monday was pay day and Herald subscriptions were urged.
The regular monthly meeting of the Women's Institute met in the Parish Hall on Tuesday afternoon July 2. Mrs G H Thompson presided in the president's absence as funds and committees reported a healthy balance and generous donations. Volunteers discussed knit bags for soldiers, a Cranbrook shipment of 500 to 700 bags, and health pamphlets on measles diphtheria and typhoid.
About thirty farmers attended the meeting with visitors from Marysville and Wasa. They adopted resolutions on gopher post assessments open free range for stock and herd regulations. A B Smith was elected delegate to the district institute.
