Late Michael Phillips of Tobacco Plains Dies at 74
Michael Phillips of Tobacco Plains Hast Kootenay died June 22 at his Elk River ranch aged 74 after a long decline following accidents and a severe winter fall. Born 1852 in Hereford England he came to the province in 1864 and served the Hudson Bay Co. before founding the Phillips ranch and later serving as Indian Agent for East and West Kootenay. He blazed trails, helped quell 1867 Wild Horse trouble, reported the Crows Nest coal measures and oil seeps, and his leadership kept order among local Indigenous communities. He leaves a widow and eight children. funeral held June 26 with many attending.
