Crying Out to the World for Help

Cranbrook to be asked next week to alleviate the suffering of destitute Central European children. The article urges donations to Save the Children Fund with a house to house canvass on January 18th and emphasizes urgent aid for famine and typhus victims in Poland and other war-ravaged regions.

First Cranbrook Recreation Club Meets for Governance

The Cranbrook Recreation Club held its first general meeting Monday with about sixty five attendees. Officers and a nine member board were elected and a constitutional plan discussed to run the club on city club lines and stabilize membership and finances. Major Hicks presented expenditures totaling 1538 dollars for repairs and start up while Mrs. B L Staples outlined progress and potential voting rules for members and juniors. Mayor Gale Wins on a Technicality in Vancouver

Mayor R. H. Gale declared elected by acclamation after rivals papers were thrown out on a technicality. It marks the second time in Vancouver a mayor will serve a fourth term.

Wedding of Bertha Brown Taplin at Cranbrook Baptist Church

Miss Bertha Miriam Brown and Ora Ray Taplin wed at Cranbrook Baptist Church with Principal W M Armstrong officiating. The ceremony featured Mendelssohn music, pink and white decor, and a reception at the bride’s home. After a two week honeymoon to Spokane and other U S cities they will reside in Yahk.

G W V A Orchestra Debuts at Liberal Rally

The G W V A orchestra gave its first public appearance at a Liberal rally in the Auditorium, delivering dance music despite an impromptu setup due to late music arrival. Members F T O Hara Nigel Thompson and J B Thornley led with pianist drummer and conductor violinist, with a grant of 10 dollars to cover initial music costs.

School Board Closes Session as H White Retires

The 1920 School Board completed its business at last Thursday’s meeting. A vote of thanks was given to Mr. H White for eleven years of faithful service, with regret voiced at his retirement this year.

Cranbrook Forum formed as debating and literary society

A meeting at the M G A led to forming The Cranbrook Forum a debating and literary society. G J Spreull provisional secretary L C Eckhert provisional secretary elected officers include W M Armstrong president and G J Spreull first vice president. Meetings weekly at the YMCA with a round table on women in politics next Tuesday led by Miss Drummond and Mr McLennan. Membership open to all interested.

Banff to Windermere Road Crew Numbers Grow

About 80 to 90 men are employed on the Banff to Windermere automobile road with plans to use up to 100 if needed. Clearing will continue through winter weather, bridges will be built, bunk houses will be erected for tourists, and grading may proceed next summer as funds permit. The Invermere Board of Trade reports 60 men at work, with potential to double, and notes no regional unemployment problem if all required workers are hired.

1921 Council in By Acclamation and Nominations

Nominations for mayor and council in 1921 are listed after a nomination day. Aldermen Jones and Flowers remain, with new names for the police commission and school board. Provincial results show Liberals winning 26 seats to 14 Conservatives and 7 Independents amid high Liberal support.

Funeral of Mrs. J. T. Millar Held Sunday Last

The funeral for Mrs. J. T. Millar, who died last Thursday at St. Eugene hospital, was held Sunday from her Burwell avenue home to the Catholic Church. A large crowd attended. Father Murphy conducted the service. Interment followed at the Catholic cemetery. She leaves a husband and young child, two brothers and a sister. Floral tributes from Cranbrook Trading Co. and many others were placed on the coffin.

Miss Bertha Brown Receives Dual Showers Before Wedding

Miss Bertha Brown, soon to marry, was honored with two social showers this week. Twentyfive guests at Mrs A C Bowness enjoyed a red and white themed event with a pumpkin centerpiece and a shower of gifts. A second gathering at Mrs Woodman’s featured a kitchen shower for about forty, including music and prize contests, ending with late refreshments. Mr and Mrs T H Conrad of Moyle visited Cranbrook during the week.

Mayors and election results highlight civic meeting

Voters chose two new school board trustees with a comfortable majority for bylaw passage to ratify the power company agreement. Police commissioner candidates A A MacKinnon and J Genest led in votes, while Baptist Women’s Mission Circle held its annual meeting with officers elected including Mrs F L Constantine as President and Mrs A Bridges as 1st VP.
