Strike Averted on Christmas Eve with Rail Engineer Raise

The wage dispute with 61 railroads west north and south of Chicago ends with a raise totaling about 8.5 percent and an average $182 yearly gain per engineer. The deal gives 40 cents daily to most engineers plus specific differentials for 215000 pound and Mallet engines and $1 a day for the heaviest Mallets. The agreement, signed Saturday, also grants engineers control of certain locomotives and a 50 cent daily wage boost for the job, while hustlers receive 25 cents more daily. The settlement was brokered by U S Commissioner Charles Neill under the Erdman Act, avoiding a Western strike.
