Remnant Left of the Parliament of Canada 1858
A correspondent writes of the December 1852 to January 1853 general election for Canada East and Canada West. Brown won in two constituencies but resigned North Oxford. Macdonalds government gained a substantial majority with Conservative and Reform allied votes. Parliament met in February 1858, with most Canada West members present. Several listed figures were living, mostly Macdonald-Cartier supporters, amid reminiscences of the era. Climate notes on Klondike conditions follow, including temperatures, frost dates, and the Yukon’s gardening potential. Also commentary on modern newspaper headings and a brief Eskimo census note from Ungava including 174 counted Eskimos, all Church of England.
