Victualling Office Tender Notices at Deptford 1814

The Victualling Commissioners announce on September 20 1814 that on September 29 tenders will be received for two hundred chaldron cargos of Pitt's tan field coal and two hundred tons of salt for Deptford stores with samples to be produced. Also invites 250 tons of Cheshire bays salt. Contract requires stove-dried salt and payment by bills 90 days after date. Public sale details follow for damaged bread ship stores at Deptford on October 6 with deposits and time limits. Also lists new grammar books by St Quentin with prices.

Washington burned by British forces under General Ross

London dispatch of September 27 1814 reports Major General Ros s letter detailing the Aug 24 action at Bladensburg and Washington. British troops under General Ross defeated American forces, captured positions, burned the Capitol arsenal dockyard treasury War Office and President's palace, and destroyed ships and bridges before withdrawing to Benedict. Casualties and captured ordnance listed, with thanks to officers and crews and notes on exchanges for wounded.
