Varna siege looms as Russian effort intensifies
From the Grasetie de France dated Sept. 22 Odessa dispatch Sept. 2 reports the Emperor has boarded the Flora frigate and will sail for Varna. Guards move along the coast toward Navamacn thes'h. A decisive attack on Varna is anticipated with heavy fighting near the fortress. Captain Pacha vows no stone left atop another if Russians win. After Varna, the Emperor plans return to St Petersburg by winter, with talks likely in the capital to end the war. Reports also mention a Turkish galley from Choumla and redoubts seized by Russians, and a broader view of troop concentrations in Russian Poland and Volhynia totaling about 250,000 men.
