Locomotive George Washington's Test Up 2800-Foot Incline
The steam engine George Washington built in Philadelphia by William Norris was tested on the Columbia and Philadelphia Railroad. It towed a 19,200 lb load up 2,800 feet in two minutes one second at 14 2 3 mph with boiler pressure just under 60 psi. It then descended with stops to verify safety, then again ascended the incline and resumed service the same morning.
