Basque Liberty and Independence in Spanish Conflict

A letter from Paris discusses Basque resistance to foreign rule as a fight for liberty. It argues Basques seek independence and a republican constitution, not absolute allegiance to Don Carlos or to Isabella, framing the struggle as a war of national interest rather than mere civil strife. The writer promises to explore reconciling Basque independence with Isabella and Spanish liberty in a future letter.

General Moreno’s Trial For Using a Fallen Passport

General Moreno appeared before the Tribunal of Correctional Police on a charge of using a fallen passport. He stated he received a passport under the name Antonio Perez at Metz, did not notice the name, and explained language barriers and prior name-change pressures from the Bishop of Leon. He asserted he sought his true name and that he had written the name in the passport himself. The court, after deliberation, condemned him to three months' imprisonment.

The Minister at Principe Theatre Madrid Provokes Prohibition

The Minister at Madrid s Principe theatre began as a Moscoso satire but was banned after the first show. Martinez, a dramatist, uncovered it was a translation from Scribe and lifted the injunction. It now plays nightly to full houses as audiences credit the author while Guzman the Liston is parodied without real reference to him.
