Russian finances grim as treasury revenue falls in 1835

Calignani's Messenger reports Imperial Treasury receipts down sharply in the first half of 1835. Customs income drops 1.4 million rubles versus 1834, while expenses rise toward 94 percent of gross product, threatening redemption of the national debt. Foreign commerce weakens with fewer ships and lower exports, and colonial military prospects are troubled by poor yields.
