Wellington letter to Editor denies large pay demand tale
Walmer Castle Oct 11 1834 the Duke of Wellington writes to the Kentish Gazette denying reports that he sought 20 000 or 28 000 for Belgian fortresses pay. He states no application was made to the Minister of War Brussels for any sum and he has no claim over any officer or government for fortresses work. The issue is debunked in a formal note. The Algerine Moniteur notes Mr T Campbell arrival in Algiers, author of The Pleasures of Hope, who had traveled with M Laurence from Paris.
