Slavery dispute over steam boat prize near Havana
News from Havana recounts a British seizure of a steamboat bound for Matanzas with enslaved Africans aboard. A Spanish schooner allegedly landed the slaves, provoking a confrontation with the British ships Palades and Magpie. The prize was contested, with 22 enslaved missing permits, and prolonged diplomatic exchanges followed as Spain and Britain argued over prize law and slave transport.
