Revolution in Santa Fe Murder and usurpation of New Mexico governorship

A dramatic report from Santa Fe dated August 12 1897 describes a revolt in which Governor Don Alvino Peres and his officers were killed or forced to flee after battle near St Ildefonso. Jose Gonzales of Taos proclaimed himself governor with Rafael Garcia aiding, while the populace faced violence and retribution against supporters of the governor and Abreu. The letter notes widespread unrest and reports of more outrages and noxious priests targeted by revolutionaries.
