This morning the London sessions opened before the Lord Mayor and court officials. The Grand Jury found 17 defendants for trial on the London calendar, all charged with robberies from the person. The Recorder urged severe punishment to stem juvenile crime and adjourned to tomorrow at the Justice Hall, Old Bailey, for business.
The editor is urged to publicize that only the forthcoming Narrative of Voyages undertaken to Explore the Shores of Africa and Arabia, compiled from Owen and his command, will be the authentic account of his proceedings. It covers voyages from 1822 to 1851 on H M S seven and Barracouta and is under Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty direction.
Thomas Callaghan of St Ann's Westminster is charged with stealing a coat belonging to Dennis Jenin a fellow lodger. Michael M Avoy testified that the suspect pawned a coat at Mr Clarris pawnbroker in Yo thill street and was identified by George Colley as the coat’s wearer. The court ordered M Avoy removed after contradicting his sworn indictment and committed him for trial. In a separate matter Ames Collins cab 1250 driver was fined thirty pounds and jailed two months for careless driving that killed a horse in Regent street.
A list of notable visitors and their lodgings across London venues including Albemarle street Whitehall Gardens Raggett's Hotel Crawley's Hotel Harcourt House and Pall Mall. Names include the Duke and Duchess of St Albans the Marchioness of Bute the Earl Talbot and General Finch with other titled persons and political figures visiting or residing in May.
The Countess of Blessington plans a new novel The Repeaters to appear soon in republication. It promises extraordinary descriptions of Ireland and London, and will reveal facts about the Agitators and upper London life. Also Mr Urquhart, back from the East, is near ready with Turkey and its Resources, offering unique insights into the Turkish Empire crisis.
In a heated debate the House discussed West Indian slave evidence laws and the cruel practice of flogging slaves. MPs from Vyvyan to O Connell challenged ministerial claims, while petitions from Sligo and London called for emancipation and reductions in taxation and governance abuses.
In Warwick the election committee ruled Sir Charles Greville not duly elected for the borough and that the petition against his return was not frivolous. Various notices follow including university changes, entailed legal debates in Haddington, and literary notices.
