Weavers rally over wage dispute in Spitalfields Hare Street Fields
A mass meeting of lace and silk weavers gathered near the Crown and Anchor in Hare Street opposite the Crown and Anchor public-house to demand living wages. Ten thousand people, including women and children, attended as officers tried to maintain order. A resolution urged masters to propose fair prices and avoid starvation, with further talks planned for Wednesday. Ambition to avoid further disruption led to peaceable conduct by day’s end.
